Clutches | Ortlinghaus

Hydraulic multi-plate clutch | Series 002

Based on our friction linings, which have been tried and trusted for many years in the marine sector, clutches in this series reconcile high torque and thermal absorption rates as well as a favorable outer diameter. A high shaft diameter can also be used. Due to their broad power spectrum, smaller sizes can be achieved with corresponding weight and cost benefits, especially in higher torque ranges. The optimized outer diameter makes shorter distances between axles possible, and in this way offers clear savings potential in the gearbox.

The hydraulic multi-plate clutch impresses with its comprehensive service friendliness. The plate pack, which is wear-free under the specified conditions, can be accessed from either side depending on the model, and ensures an easy, safe, and swift replacement of the plate pack. The special design also ensures that other components cannot fall out during replacement.

The Ortlinghaus muti-plate clutches safely accelerate even large propellers and generators. This optimal further development of our tried-and-tested technology sets today's industry standards.

Main drive locking clutch | Series 055
Linear motion lock

According to DIN EN 692, the relevant safety standards for press engineering, a mechanical restraining device must be present in mechanical presses for repair work and work between the two halves of the tool.

The Ortlinghaus linear motion lock from the series 055 is an approved restraining device according to the German employers' liability insurance association. The linear motion lock is used to positively lock a shaft to the fixed housing of a clutch so that the shaft cannot rotate. This is particularly desirable for presses to ensure that the press ram will not move in an uncontrolled or unintended manner during servicing or maintenance work between the two halves of the die.

The Ortlinghaus ram locking mechanism enables a variable locking of the press ram in any position, with a short actuating time. The linear motion lock is matched to and integrated into the machine's drivetrain. It is engaged or disengaged hydraulically. The state of the ram locking mechanism actuated by oil pressure, either locked or unlocked, is detected using inductive travel sensors and transmitted to the machine control unit.

Applications:  Automotive presses / Forging presses

  • Torque: 11,000 - 100,000 Nm
  • Outside diameter: 480 - 900 mm

Mechnical clutch | Series 100

They are supplied with the friction combinations steel/steel, steel/sintered lining and steel/organic lining and as a result are suitable for wet-running and dry-running, i.e. they can be used in either an open design or a closed design. Engagement and disengagement of the clutches is by means of a „sliding sleeve“ with a cam profile which is moved axially over resilient angle levers, these in turn transmit the required force to the set of plates.

A limited amount of plate wear is compensated for by the resilient bending of the levers so that the torque capable of being transmitted remains constant to a large extent and adjustment is only necessary after an extended period of time. The engaging/disengaging movement can be introduced by means of hand levers, pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders or electromechanical actuation systems.

Applications:  Decks machinery

  • Torque: 20 - 1,400 Nm

100

Hydraulic clutch | Series 127

Hydraulically actuated clutches and brakes work exclusively with “wet-running” oil-cooled plates with the friction pairing steel/sintered lining. The advantages of actuation with pressure oil at 80 bar, the multi-plate construction type and the oil-cooled friction pairing steel/high-performance sinter result in an exceptionally compact design with high performance.

They feature high torques, low mass moments of inertia, high switch times and little maintenance. The separate design requires different shaft ends for installation, which makes it possible to use different clutch and brake sizes. Since they run in a sealed housing, no dirt is released into the environment.

The international safety regulations for press manufacture were taken into consideration for the design. The clutch-brake combinations have been recognized as safe by the German Employers’ Liability Insurance Association and type-tested by the Swedish Industrial Safety Authority.

Applications:  Forging presses

  • Torque: up to 300,000 Nm

Hydraulical clutch | Series 202

In its company‘s history of more than hundred years, Ortlinghaus has built an image as a strong partner for the marine industry concerning clutches, brakes and plates. Based on this experience Ortlinghaus developed the hydraulically actuated multiplate clutch series 202.

All construction details had been adapted to the marine industry and optimized. The result is a modern multi-plate clutch as consequent development of proven technology. A high torque with simultaneous high heat capacity is achieved, connected with low weight due to a smaller outside diameter. Additionally there is the possibility to use a large shaft diameter. Because of the power-density, it is possible, especially with torque ranging high, to choose a smaller unit size for less weight and cost. The smaller outside diameter allows smaller shaft centre distance for weight and cost savings of the transmission.

Special attention during development was focus on easy maintenance. Thus the plate package – which works free of wear in the defined operational conditions – can be accessed from both sides depending on series-design. Thus other parts are prevented from falling-off during service work. Because the core clutch components are based on proven technology, this clutch will also provide the safety Ortlinghaus is known for. It will contribute to accelerate large propeller- and generator masses in a secure manner.

Applications:  Decks machinery / Propulsion

  • Torque: 22,000 - 1,600,000 Nm

Slipping clutch | Series 600/700

Ortlinghaus slipping clutches are always used when external peak loads need to be absorbed and smoothed safely. They provide protection from peak torque and unexpected stoppages. As the release torque can be set, torque is also transferred during slipping so that no uncontrolled torque transmission takes place. A reset is not required either.

Our safety clutches have proven their worth over decades of the most demanding mining use and they undergo constant further development.

Combined clutch with flexible clutch | Series 992
Clutch coupling and highly-flexible clutch in a compact unit

Due to short development times, designers today try to concentrate on core skills. To do this the necessary bought-in components must selected effectively with the high level of reliability to be expected. This will be made possible by merging single components into a compact unit ready to be installed. This should be designed by the supplier for the application, if necessary adapted for this and supplied complete.

A traditional drive solution for a diesel engine consists not only of the engine but also the clutch coupling including media supply, torsional vibration damper and the input and output side flanges. Here up until now it has been necessary to design not only the engine whose power is produced from the requirements of the driven end but also the clutch coupling and the flexible clutch and to string all the parts on a shaft including designing input and output flanges. Design costs that cannot be underestimated.

Ortlinghaus provides a combination of a torsional vibration damper and clutch coupling for a wide range of drive tasks. This includes an oil feed and all the necessary connection flanges, e.g. in compliance with the SAE for direct connection to a diesel engine. These compact, ready-to-install units offer all the advantages of the familiar Ortlinghaus clutches, such as a high level of reliability, many different sizes and designs and long spare parts' availability together with tried and tested, highly flexible clutches, perfectly suited to the application.

These combinations not only save time and money in the design process (an important factor with shorter and shorter development times) but also space because the functions contained are arranged so as to save space. They can be fitted quickly and easily because they are ready-to-install units. A high level of reliability is guaranteed because all components are all perfectly attuned to each other.
  • Torque: 5,000 - 17,000 Nm
